The Idaho State Capitol building has a rich history that began 15 years after Idaho became a state.

In 1905, the legislature voted to begin construction on the Capitol building and hired Boise architect John Tourtellotte to do the job. Tourtellotte’s resulting masterpiece made great use of natural light as well as a unique combination of materials to create a building that, while reminiscent of other great domed buildings in the world, is unlike any other in the Boise skyline. The majority of the Capitol building is constructed using sandstone from Table Rock, a nearby Boise landmark. Records indicate convicted felons from the then-fledgling Idaho State Penitentiary were the ones to haul the sandstone from Table Rock to the construction site.

Tourtellotte also incorporated different kinds of marble into the building’s walls and accents—red marble from Georgia, grey marble from Alaska, green marble from Vermont, and black marble from Italy. His primary inspiration came from St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, and the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. It’s no surprise that the Idaho State Capitol inspires a certain amount of gravitas and old-world romance.

Did you know?

From inside the building’s Rotunda, visitors can look upward to see 13 small stars representing the original American colonies, and 43 larger stars, symbolizing that Idaho was the 43rd state in the union?

Underground tunnels connect the Idaho State Capitol building to the Supreme Court and other adjacent government buildings. These tunnels are used daily by legislative members but are not open to the public.

There is a scale replica of the Liberty Bell on the front steps of the Capitol building and visitors are encouraged to ring the bell.

According to the Capitol Commission, the original cost of the Idaho State Capitol building was $2.1 million; comparable estimates for a similar project today would exceed $100 million. Many materials used in the original construction of the building are today considered irreplaceable.

The Idaho State Capitol building is the only one in the U.S. to use geothermal water as a heat source. Like much of Boise, the Capitol building sits on top of geothermal heat meaning the water has to be pumped from depths of more than 3,000 feet.

Capitol Restoration Project

In 1998, Idaho officials began discussing plans to restore the Capitol building from nearly a century of natural wear and tear. Initial plans were drawn, and a master plan was eventually approved and funded to complete an extensive restoration project. In 2010, interior and exterior renovations were completed, as well as the construction of the additional underground legislative meeting rooms and offices, now known as the Garden Level.

Capitol Art

Last month we mentioned the art you’d see on a tour of the Capitol, and there are several impressive pieces. One of our favorites is a fantastic replica of the Winged Victory statue, or the Nike of Samothrace at the Louvre. The replica was a gift to the United States from France after World War II. Another remarkable piece is the statue of George Washington by Charles Ostner that stands on the south side of the rotunda and is carved from a single piece of pine. The figure was originally bronzed and given to the Idaho territory in 1869, but was repaired and covered in gold leaf almost 100 years later.

Other Capitol art includes some modern additions with historical roots: in 2010, when the underground wings were built, multiple old-growth trees had to be uprooted to make way for the new expansion project. Some of the trees had been planted by Presidents Benjamin Harrison, William Howard Taft, and Theodore Roosevelt. But the wood wasn’t discarded. A forward-thinking legislator, Representative Max Black, arranged for the wood to be given to local artists and turned into objects to display in the Capitol.

The Idaho Capitol
The Idaho State Capitol building in downtown Boise serves up a main course of history with a side of style and functionality. The historic building with its columned rotunda is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike to tour and experience art, architecture, and a past rich with Idaho lore. It’s likely that when you see photos or postcards of our capital city that the images feature downtown Boise’s picturesque skyline and undulating foothilled backdrop. The capitol building is often front and center and it’s no surprise why; the iconic structure stands out at one of the city’s most striking architectural display with beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens.
But as impressive as it is from the outside, the inside of the building is even more breathtaking, with multi-colored marble from around the world, sandstone from Table Rock, natural light cascading from giant windows, plus a large collection of paintings and statues.

The Capitol is open to the public seven days a week and visitors are encouraged to come in and see the building during open hours. Of course, during the legislative session, government functions may mean certain rooms are unavailable or off-limits, but for the most part, the Capitol is free and open. When the legislature is in session, the 4th-floor gallery is open to the public to view the House and Senate proceedings. The Boise Depot
The stunning historic train depot is a wonderful location to tour, and the added bonus is a panoramic view of downtown Boise and the foothills included.

The Boise Depot is a beautiful historic Spanish-style landmark operated by the Boise Parks and Recreation Department. Its primary use these days is as a public ceremonial or meeting space. But its history makes it worth visiting, too. Designed by New York architects in the early 1900s, the building first opened in 1925 to elaborate fanfare. There’s an open house scheduled every month with free public tours scheduled twice during the day, usually at noon and 1:30.

Any visit to the depot should include a tour of the grounds; located on a hillside overlooking Capitol Boulevard and downtown Boise, Platt Gardens is a scenic location for photos of the grandest or smallest proportions. The gardens were donated to the city in 1982 by the Union Pacific Railroad. Designed by Spanish landscape architect Ricardo Espino, the Platt Gardens feature a winding walk, benches, ponds, a monument of volcanic rock and a welcoming display of greenery.

Historical Trolley Tour
Don’t love the idea of a long walk through town? Take a trolley through Boise’s historic downtown instead! Opening again at the end of April, Boise Trolley Tours advertise an easy way to see for yourself what makes Boise “wonderful and unique.” Ride along to the tune of well-told stories about many locations throughout the city including the Old Penitentiary, the Depot, the Capitol, the Old Fort, city parks, and other lesser known sites along the way. Trolley Tours promises a well-researched script to ensure all information delivered is accurate. The trolley is enclosed, has heat and air conditioning, and has a wheelchair lift to provide easy access for all.

Boise Art Museum
Experience the rotating exhibits and art on display at Boise Art Museum (BAM) with a self-guided tour. The museum also hosts regular events and lectures, as well as First Thursday specials. Idaho State Museum
If one museum isn’t enough, take a front row seat to Idaho’s past at the newly remodeled Idaho State Museum. Located right in Downtown Boise, the State Museum is designed to lend a fascinating glimpse into the past to families, school groups, and history-loving individuals alike.

Old Idaho Penitentiary
Peak into the prison cells of some of the West’s most notorious criminals at the Old Idaho Penitentiary. Bogus Basin
It’s peak skiing season at Bogus Basin, a mere 16.5 mile scenic drive from Boise. Glide through the powder at this beautiful, natural bowl in the valley across from the Owyhee Mountains. The drive alone – along a switchback road that transitions from high desert sagebrush to coniferous evergreens, all the while offering breathtaking views of the valley – is worth the trip, regardless of the season. But the Basin offers more than skiing: there’s snowboarding, tubing, and even a mountain coaster to view the snowy forest in all its glory. Pack some thermoses and your wool socks and take in a scenic drive up to Bogus. Bonus: while the Boise valley sometimes experiences gloomy skies during the winter months, Bogus tends to stay sunny with its peaks above the clouds. Head up the highway for a sunshine fix!

The Springs in Idaho City
The Springs in Idaho City is a beautiful, secluded retreat from the real world, and just 45 minutes away from downtown Boise. Nestled in the Boise National Forest on 80 acres of wooded bliss, you'll find a place to soak away your cares and immerse in Mother Nature. Indulge in the many options for your soaking and rejuvenation needs at The Springs Resort near Idaho City, Idaho. There are many other hot springs within an hour or two from Boise, and many feature beautiful mountain views. On our short list are Kirkham Hot Springs, Pine Flats Hot Spring, Moondipper Hot Springs, and Pine Burl Hot Springs. You can’t miss!

Sledding at Camel’s Back Park
The steep hills at Camel’s Back Park make for ideal sledding and tubing. Take any snowfall as an opportunity to take the kids and kids at heart to get out and play in the powder. Of course, since it ‘s one of the most popular hills in Boise, you’re likely to part of a crowd. Located in the North End of Boise, Camel's Back Park sees hundreds of sledders every winter. The orange fencing along the hill's chute is there for your protection and nature’s, protecting grass seed that crews laid back in the fall as part of a project to stabilize the chute. After hitting the “slopes” in the North End, don’t forget to stop for hot cocoa and a quick bite at a local restaurant in Hyde Park afterward. Try Goody’s Soda Fountain, Java Hyde Park, or Certified Kitchen and Bakery.

Idaho Steelheads
Grab a beer or a hot dog and take in the thrill of the watching the city’s minor league hockey team right in downtown Boise. The Idaho Steelheads are an affiliate to the NHL’s Dallas Stars, so the game you’ll see will be nothing short of spectacular. Games tend to fall on weekends, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Check the Steelhead’s schedule to plan your trip around their next home game!

Boise State University Athletics
If you’d rather watch than play, and you’ve already made it over to watch the Steelheads at the Idaho Central Arena, consider catching a Boise State basketball game while you’re here, too. You don’t have to bleed blue, just root for the home team!

Discovery Center of Idaho
Science exhibits and mind-blowing experiments make for hands-on learning and entertainment for the whole family at the Discovery Center of Idaho. There’s plenty of room to play and beat the winter blues after you’ve been shut inside for too long.

MK Nature Center
The MK Nature Center is a 4.6-acre reserve on the Boise River Greenbelt with an interactive interpretive center. Even on cold winter days, the short walk is absolutely beautiful and invigorating.

Children’s Museum of Idaho
Newly renovated, the Children’s Museum of Idaho makes for an excellent cold-weather activity. Check their events calendar for special activities for the little people in your family.

Pop-up Park at Edward’s Greenhouse
Every year in late January, Edward’s Greenhouse on the North End offers a respite from the cold by converting part of their warm greenhouse into a pop-up park with fresh green sod and plenty of room for everyone to play.

Zoo Boise
It may be cold outside, but the Zoo is a great place to spend an afternoon. Many animals are more active during the cooler months and crowds tend to be smaller, too!

The Egyptian Theater opened for business with “Don Juan” on April 19, 1927, but changed names a few times in the decades since, known by guests as the Fox in the 1930s, the ADA in the 1940s, and again as the Egyptian in the late 1970s. Today the venue offers a warm and lovingly restored environment with special attention devoted to the building’s original architectural details and motifs. The Flicks Theater in downtown Boise has been the city’s answer for an old-fashioned movie theater experience since 1984. Serving beer, wine, espresso, and snacks with its movies, a night at The Flicks is one you simply don’t want to miss. Relish in its four movie screens, lobby cafe with fireplace, upstairs meeting room, and video/DVD rental shop. Films include independent, foreign flicks, documentaries, and of course, Hollywood’s best. After the movie, grab a seat by the fire and order some soup or a juicy burger before finishing with a homemade dessert. Domestic and imported microbrews and a selection of fine wines round out the meal. Locals consider The Flicks an integral part of Boise’s cultural and arts scene and make visiting it a weekly event. So join them while you’re in town; it’s right around the corner from Inn at 500 Capitol.

Boise’s no slouch when it comes to good eats. In fact, a few of our bakers had such a good idea, their recipe for success spread around the country. Great Harvest Bread Co. is one of the most successful bakeries and café chains in the country, and they got their start right here in Boise.

Step in on W Fairview Avenue and you’ll get the homespun, mom-and-pop feel immediately. The bakery’s dedication to nutritious and delicious pieces of bread and sweets made it an instant success when the ovens were first fired up, and their recipes haven’t changed. Try their award-winning buns, cookies, scones, muffins, and other delectable treats that folks line up for before doors even open. We suggest anything sweet with a cup of piping hot chocolate, coffee, or milky tea.

You might also visit the Boise Art Museum. Open every day, but Monday, you can find art for every taste here. The time it right, and take advantage of the First Thursday deal by skipping the ticket booth to pay what you wish. On that day, the museum stays open late, until 7 p.m., so you and yours can relax and mingle with your favorite painters or linger longer at the museum’s winter exhibitions. If you prefer being together outdoors, on the other hand, visit Winter Garden aGlow. Celebrating its 26th year, this wondrous display of 600,000 lights and holiday activities is sure to warm you up with holiday cheer. Hop on the swing by the Garden Cottage and sneak a kiss for posterity at the Holiday Selfie Station. Don’t forget to wave hello to Mr. and Mrs. Clause and warm yourselves by the fire with some hot cocoa. Tickets are on sale now for the garden’s biggest fundraiser of the year.

Too cold outside for you? Our expert culinary staff at Richard’s, right inside the Inn at 500 Capitol, is ready and waiting to bring dinner to you. Room service is available until 9 p.m. every night of the week with a menu full of mouth-watering offerings including whipped feta and hearth-baked flatbread, sumptuous house-made plates of pasta, king salmon, creamy gnocchi, and prime meats grilled to order. Every year since its grand opening in 2014, Boise Brewing has hosted a beer festival in front of the brewery called Hoptober Freshtival. Attracting more than 2000 thirsty guests each year, Hoptober Freshtival is the largest fresh hop beer festival in the entire state of Idaho.

The festival features more than 70 fresh hop and seasonal beers from 35 plus local and regional craft breweries. Since Idaho ranks among the top three states in the country for hop production, the festival serves a dual purpose to showcase local hop farmers’ beers and to educate those in attendance about how those farmers treat their ingredients.

With that in mind, the event is designed so that guests can enjoy tasting specialty beer offerings while rubbing elbows with the hop farmers responsible for crafting the beer, literally from the ground up. Adding to the fun, live music will fill the tents from noon to two with DJ Cody mixing in from four to eight. There’s also an open bike ride from two to three with bicycle races scheduled from three to four.

The festival has grown substantially over the past few years– from 100s to 1000s of people– with even more expected this year. So don’t waste a minute! Reserve your ticket for October 15th and help Boise Brewing give back to the local community.

Didn’t we mention their investment in the people? Well, Boise Brewing– which got its start thanks in large part to a robust Kickstarter campaign– is one of a growing number of community or member-owned breweries in the country. Close to 300 individuals and businesses are part-owners of the brewery that has produced thousands of barrels of beer every year since it opened. The original owners, while growing their brand as the fun & friendly “brewery next door” take pride in providing their patrons a fun way to try new beers and learn more about what makes Idaho beer so great.

If your visit to Boise doesn’t coincide with the Freshtival, don’t worry! You can visit Boise Brewing anytime. Art by the River 2022 is juried fine arts and crafts show scheduled for September 17th and 18th on the sweeping community green at the River House in Star. The cozy mountain town, situated just half an hour from Boise, was named by 19th-century travelers en route to the capital who used a painted star on the schoolhouse to know which way was east. Today, Star is regarded as a family-friendly town anchored by local businesses and humbled by the surrounding landscape. And it makes the perfect host for artists coming from around the state wishing to show off their best work. In the event’s first year, featured art included woodwork, ceramics, watercolor, oil, metal works, mosaic art, glass, and more. And this year is no different. In order to compete for judges’ prizes, artists will have to have submitted their work by the end of July. But it’s more than an artist competition; in addition to high-quality, peer-juried art, this fun Fall event will also feature a talented solo musical artist and a deliciously diverse selection of local food and drinks. Try local bites and brews from any of the visiting truck vendors. Art will be for sale, too– not just to be seen– like a gallery you can take home with you.

Want to make a day of it? Arrive early to take advantage of some leafy shade and explore the hiking paths along the rambling Boise River. The Star River Walk is an easy 2.6-mile out-and-back path that’s perfect for the whole family. There are mountain bike paths, too, and big plans to improve and expand the trail system for all users overall. The River House on the community green, meanwhile, is a place worth exploring, too. The Art Barn, as it’s also called, is a multi-purpose venue for concerts, expos, plays, markets, and even trick-or-treating. The Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic is so much more than high-altitude fun. It’s a 5-day community event that dates back more than 30 years. The first gathering of balloons was called the Boise River Festival Hot Air Balloon Rally; it wasn’t until 2010 that it received its current name. But its venue, the expansive Ann Morrison Park, hasn’t changed 31 years on.
So come join the crowds of locals and tourists to see what this beautiful, uplifting experience is all about! Here’s a day-by-day schedule of events:

Day 1: During “Cap-Ed Kid’s Day” hot air balloons begin inflating on the launch field at about 6:45 am. Starting at about 7:25 am, balloons will be inflated on the public-access field to give visiting kids an opportunity to learn how the massive balloons work and even get to take a free tethered ride! Don’t forget your camera!

Day 2: On Media Day all your favorite local media friends will be available to talk about their experiences. About 20 balloons will lift off into the skies starting at 7:20 am.

Day 3: V.I.P. Day ends with the crowd-favorite Nite Glow Spectacular. Aeronauts arrive before dawn to start inflating balloons in time for a special, morning tribute launch in honor of long-time Boise media legend, Larry Gebert. He was a Balloon Classic icon, interviewing people who would share their experiences with the community. After the tribute, the balloons will take off for the week’s signature fly-over. It’s the first of a few daylight photo opportunities you’ll get during the week, and you can see them from anywhere near the park and many places downtown.
The Nite Glow Spectacular begins before dark so visitors can enjoy the local food and craft vendors and live music. Just after 8:00 pm, all eyes turn to the sky to watch balloons start lighting up from the ground for an unforgettable luminary display.

Day 4: Dawn Patrol starts at–you guessed it!--dawn, when pilots begin inflating for a 6:00, am launch. By 7:20 am, the Boise skyline will be filled with the color of about 50 balloons. You don’t have to be an Ann Morrison Park to see it. Just don’t forget your camera–wherever you are!

Alive After 5 celebrates its 35th anniversary this summer in Downtown Boise, and this year, like every year past, it’s free for everyone who attends. Every two-hour walking tour explores the inspiring public art collection in Boise’s diverse neighborhoods beginning and ending on the Capitol Boulevard Plaza at City Hall. With the plainly stated goal, “To share our love for glass art with our community and to create positive, memorable experiences,” Boise Art Glass has inspired and instructed its visitors for more than a decade. The glass studio is owned and operated by internationally-trained artist, Filip Vogelpohl. Czech-born and Idaho raised Vogelpohl trained under Italian tutelage before returning to Boise to open up a glass blowing shop and studio of his own. Today, the talented artisan works with a team of others to lead classes and tours that feature their prized furnace and hot shop. Consider timing your visit to overlap the first Thursday of the month to attend the Boise Art Glass class by the same name. Just a quick 10-minute drive from our hotel, the Aquarium of Boise (previously the Idaho Aquarium) is housed in a 10,000-square-foot renovated warehouse space. During your visit to the aquarium, which now comprises 38 unique exhibits, you’ll have lots of opportunities for hands-on exploration with several touch tanks that let you handle or touch underwater animals like sharks, rays, crabs, and starfish. You’ll marvel at the colorful coral reef habitat, the surprisingly elegant shark nursery, the imposing giant octopus tank, the song-filled bird aviary, and many other fun and fascinating exhibits. The Aquarium of Boise is open Monday through Saturday from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. and on Sunday from noon to 5 P.M.

One of our favorites is the Discovery Center of Idaho, a kid-friendly science museum located just a half-mile from our hotel. The Discovery Center features around 200 exhibits at any one time, most of which are interactive, and all of which are designed to evoke wonder and instill interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. (We’re especially fond of the Centripetal Wheel and Bubble Wall, but you’ll have to judge for yourself.) The Discovery Center also hosts special Adult Nights, which feature drinks, delicious food from local restaurants, and live musical entertainment. For a fun and informative outing perfect for the whole family, you can’t go wrong with the Discovery Center of Idaho.

This route has become an absolute favorite of ours – especially since it’s bookended by our two properties – Inn at the 5th) in Eugene and Inn at 500 Capitol in Boise. Here’s what we recommend along the way, whether you’re in the mood to meander or just stop for the basics.

Boise to Bend

Head West on Interstate 84 to Ontario, Oregon, where you’ll exit to take Highway 20 all the way to Bend (about a five-hour drive from Boise). Note there are long stretches on this highway where gas stations are scarce, so fill up in Burns if you’re running low. (And remember, it’s illegal to pump your own gas in Oregon. Tipping, however, is not expected or required.)

Where to Eat/Drink in Bend

Bend has a reputation for being a beer-lover’s paradise with more breweries per capita than any other city in Oregon, so of course a stop at a local taproom is a must. We recommend Bend Brewing Company both for its scenery on the banks of the Deschutes River (with ample outdoor service as weather allows) and its tasty pub fare. We also love Crux Fermentation Project for its non-traditional brewing methods and off-the-beaten-path location, housed in a former AAMCO Transmission Plant. There is no shortage of great restaurants in Bend, with something for every taste and comfort level. For a sit-down experience, we head to Zydeco Kitchen & Cocktails for Northwestern cuisine with a Southern twist. The restaurant has taken some extraordinary precautions for the safety of its guests and staff, including installing UV and ozone scrubbers on all of its air handling units. Latin-inspired Barrio is another standout, which has ample options for dining in, curbside pickup, or even a food truck on Bend’s Eastside. And speaking of food trucks, Bend has several food cart “pods” for a variety of open-air options suiting any taste. Our picks are The Lot and The Podski. For breakfast or sweet treats, we’re all about the Foxtail Bakeshop & Kitchen – a counter service brunch restaurant that serves coffee from Bend’s own Lone Pine Coffee Roasters.

Our friends at the Wall Street Suites are located right downtown and offer suites with fully furnished kitchens, king beds, marble and stone walk-in showers, and lots of natural woodwork. Many are pet-friendly.

Bend to Eugene

It’s about a 2.5-hour drive from Bend to Eugene, with several routes to choose from (all scenic). There’s no wrong choice – just check conditions and details in advance of your travels.

Highway 126 along the McKenzie River is the best option for water-lovers, taking in roadside waterfalls like Koosah and Sahalie Falls, which are as impressive in their wintry splendor as their springtime glory. This route also has several romantic covered bridges, including the quintessential Goodpasture Bridge near Vida, which fortunately has survived recent wildfires in the area. If mountains and alpine lakes are more your scenes, the Highway 97/58 option is for you. Oakridge is a prime spot to stop for mountain biking, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling if you’re looking to stretch your legs. Don’t miss Stewart’s 58 Drive-In for burgers and shakes and Insta-worthy pictures of the classic 1950s building.

The Julia Davis Park connects the Inn at 500 Capitol with the Boise River Greenbelt, a 25-mile paved pathway for biking, walking, and running alongside the Boise River.

Go Skiing (and more) at Bogus Basin
Bogus Basin resort is just a half an hour away from downtown Boise and boasts a diverse 2,600 square acres of downhill skiable terrain. Not a skier? There’s also cross- country skiing, as well as winter tubing on-site. If you’re flying Alaska Airlines from Seattle to Boise, be sure to take advantage of their “Ski Free” promotion for the 2020-2021 winter season. It allows skiers and snowboarders free lift passes after they present an Alaska Airlines boarding pass.
Tamarack Resort
Tamarack Resort near Donnelly (about a two-hour drive from Boise) has new ownership and is adding all sorts of long-awaited amenities and dining options for the 2020/21 season. We’re especially excited about the food hall in the village, boasting new restaurants like Alpine Grill, Pizza, Summit Bowls, and Tilted Taco.
Soldier Mountain
Definitely off-the-radar, Soldier Mountain is a family-friendly and affordable mountain near Sun Valley. With just two chair lifts and a magic carpet, it’s a small operation for sure, but it offers some of the best backcountry skiing in the state with its snowcats – promising private powder stashes for those in the know.
Pomerelle Mountain Resort
Pomerelle Mountain Resort is located in tiny Albion, about 2.5 hours from Boise. Like many Idaho resorts, it also offers night skiing – a fun (and often less expensive) way to enjoy the mountain. We love Pomerelle’s laid-back and relaxed atmosphere, as well as the friendly staff.

1. See a Flick at a Drive-In. The Parma Motor-Vu Drive-In is screening movies (both classics and newer releases) into October. The delightfully retro, family-owned business has a full snack bar plus what many are calling the best popcorn in the valley. Details on what’s showing and when are available here.
2. Savor Fresh Produce. The Boise Farmer’s Market operates through October, meaning there’s still plenty of harvests to enjoy with local corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, carrots, beets, kale, and more. The Farmer’s Market Drive-Thru is a new and improved option, including a “personal shopping” and delivery service that makes it even easier to order. Or the Capital City Public Market offers chances to shop in-person on Saturdays (9 a.m. – 2 p.m.) and Wednesdays (5 p.m. – 8 p.m.) in Garden City, with artisan crafts and food trucks to round out the festive experience.
Don’t feel like cooking all that produce for yourself? Richard’s is showcasing late summer’s bounty with dishes like the Summer Risotto, Stuffed Zucchini, and House-Pickled Vegetables, and they can be enjoyed al fresco atop the Plaza on the 2nd floor of the Inn at 500.
3. Get Back in the Saddle. Late summer/early fall is the perfect time to explore Boise by bicycle, and with more than 150 trails and routes, Boise is a mountain biker’s paradise. The Big Potato is a legendary 41-mile loop that will take you throughout the Boise foothills. If you haven’t ridden this Boise bucket-list trail, now is the perfect time to attempt it. Looking to start biking or improve your skills? The Boise Bike Academy has private and small group lessons to help you get familiar with your mountain bike or fine-tune your techniques.
4. Hear Some Live Music. Head to Caldwell for the Tuesdays on the Creek Concert Series from 6 to 9 p.m. through October 13, or pack a picnic blanket and visit Ste. Chappelle Winery on Sunday afternoons for their Concerts in the Park. Gates open at 11 a.m., with the concert at 1 p.m., on Sundays through Sept. 20.
5. Take a Stroll through the Idaho Botanical Gardens. The gardens are open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the cooler weather means you can take in the calming flowers and tranquil ponds without having to hop from one shaded spot to the next. On Saturdays through the end of September, Tai Chi classes are available in the garden – giving you a chance to start your morning with the invigorating sounds (and scents) of the garden.

That’s true not only when it comes to the arts and sciences, but also when it comes to cultures of the world. At the Basque Museum and Cultural Center, just a five-minute walk from our hotel, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the vibrant history of the people who hail from Basque Country, a beautiful region that encompasses parts of northern Spain and southwestern France. Originally located in a former boarding house for Basque immigrants, which also happens to be Boise’s oldest brick building, in 1993 the museum moved a few doors over to accommodate its ever-expanding collection. Today, the museum boasts many fascinating exhibits and extensive archives detailing the rich history and culture of the Basque immigrants who chose to make the USA their new home. From the traditional sheep wagons to the art of arborglyphs to the joy of Dantzak, and much more, the exhibits at the Basque Museum and Cultural Center will show you a side of world history and Boise history you never expected.

This year, from March 25 to 29, the Treefort Music Festival will set a new record, bringing over 500 musical acts to 26 venues across downtown Boise. As if that weren’t enough, the festival will also feature 10 “forts” specializing in other kinds of entertainment at various downtown locations. Among the eclectic forts are Alefort, serving craft beers, ciders, and tasty bites from popular local vendors; Dragfort, bringing you vibrant live performances and panel discussions from fabulous drag queens and other folks from the broader queer community; Filmfort, screening movies made by our region’s best indie film talent; Kidfort, which works across other forts to create ongoing entertainment aimed at the many children who come to Treefort; and several other exciting forts for attendees of all ages.

Bogus Basin is also home to The Glade Runner, Idaho’s one and only mountain coaster, giving riders the opportunity to indulge the thrill of hurtling down 4,330 feet of gloriously twisted track. On Friday, December 6, and Saturday, December 7, the Boise Philharmonic will perform Handel’s Messiah at St. John’s Cathedral, and on Saturday, December 14, you can enjoy the Philharmonic’s immensely popular Holiday Pops concert at the Morrison Center. Drop by the Morrison Center again December 19 – 23 to see Ballet Idaho’s rendition of The Nutcracker, arguably the world’s most beloved ballet.

There are plenty of recurring events throughout the month too, including two Saturday holiday markets featuring local organic produce, gourmet meats, fine wines, and other treats; free horse-drawn carriage rides (with hot chocolate) every Friday and Saturday; a series of classic holiday movies at the historic Egyptian Theatre; and much more.

The signature event, Winter Garden aGlow, takes place most evenings through Saturday, January 4, at the Idaho Botanical Garden. You’ll walk into a winter wonderland adorned with more than 400,000 colorful Christmas lights, with plenty of hot cider, hot cocoa, food trucks, and fire pits to keep you warm and energized through the evening.

On Saturday, October 12, over 2000 revelers will congregate in front of Boise Brewing, just a block from our hotel, to celebrate all that makes Idaho beer so outstanding (fun fact: Idaho is one of the top three hop producers in the nation). This festival is a beer-lover's paradise, offering up more than 60 fresh hop and seasonal selections carefully crafted by over 30 local and regional breweries. As the libations flow, you’ll also have the chance to partake in an array of lively festival games and chat with the farmers and brewery wizards whose hard work brings us this spectacular day of suds every year.

The Potato room's décor is inspired by the world famous Idaho potato, including artwork such as Marilyn Monroe donning a burlap Idaho potato sack. (We have a handful of such themed rooms, giving a nod to local landmarks and cultural institutions, alongside a broad collection of local art and locally focused amenities, like Idaho wine and beer, served complimentary at check-in.) The Potato Suite is a deluxe king, featuring a private furnished balcony and a gas fireplace. 

Inspired by the giant potato turned Airbnb rental that recently made headlines around the globe, we’ve decided to publicize the Potato Suite with a new Idaho Potato Package, launching on National Fry Day. 

Included in the one-night package is an all-day long supply of fries for two people from nearby Boise Fry Co., which serves up fries "with burgers on the side." The local chain offers seasonal spuds including Russet, purple, gold, yam, sweet, and Laura, with a selection of daily cuts including shoestring, regular, homestyle, and po'balls.

Boise Fry Co. will also offer guests booking the package a behind-the-scenes experience with the cooks and a ketchup mixing master class—the company is known for its array of house-made dipping sauces with unusual flavors, like blueberry.

The company stages five plays from May through September at the Festival Amphitheater and Reserve, a state-of-the-art, open-air performance venue that can accommodate up to 770 guests. Since the theater is nestled in a protected nature reserve, your evening will begin with a tranquil walk among lush flora populated by deer, heron, ducks, and geese. This summer’s exciting line-up includes two Shakespearean classics: The Taming of the Shrew (May 24 – June 23) and The Tragedy of Julius Caesar (Aug 1 – 29). But that’s not all. On Saturday, April 6, the Outdoor Boise Farmers Market is back and better than ever with a cornucopia of local, organic foods, live musical entertainment, and fun activities to teach kids about cooking and nutrition every Saturday through October. On Saturday, April 13, the Capital City Public Market kicks off its outdoor farmers market season as well with over 130 farmers, artists, and artisans coming together in downtown Boise to serve thousands of excited shoppers every Saturday through December. And last but not least, the 34^th Street Market in nearby Garden City is now open Tuesdays through Sundays, delighting both Idaho natives and visitors with all the standard farmers market fare, plus a beer garden and a tantalizing assortment of food trucks. But how far away is Garden City, you ask? The drive from our hotel to the 34^th Street Market takes just 8 minutes. Even better, though, as a guest of the Inn at 500 Capitol, you're invited to take a complimentary cruiser bike and coast along the gorgeous Boise River Greenbelt for a breathtaking 12-minute ride that will lead you right to the heart of the market.

Founded by four friends in 2012, the original Treefort Music Festival featured 137 bands performing in 13 venues. This year there will be over 450 bands and two dozen performance venues. Treefort is about much more than just music, though. This festival “transforms Downtown Boise into a playground by building a huge Main Stage surrounded by existing and alternative venues.” So, in addition to the live bands, you’ll also have the opportunity to indulge in the pleasures of the various “forts” within Treefort, including Alefort, bringing you the best craft beers, ciders, and finger-licking grub in the Midwest; Comedyfort, bringing you stand-up comedians from across the U.S. to tickle your funny bone all weekend long; Filmfort, bringing you the finest emerging indie film talent in the nation; Yogafort, bringing you the synergy of the global yoga community in one place; and much, much more. Special attractions at Zoo Boise include the famous Giraffe Encounter, for a chance to get up close to the regal, long-necked creatures of the African savannah; the Sloth Bear Encounter, for a chance to get up close to these slightly less regal but no less adorable bears of India; and the Zoo Farm, for a chance to hand feed sheep, goats, and llamas. And those are just a few of the year-round events. The next special event, the Animal Painted Rocks Hunt, will take place on February 16 from 10 A.M. – 5 P.M. Just a quick ten-minute drive northeast of our hotel, the Bogus Basin Recreation Area has been a premier location for winter sports enthusiasts since 1942. Visitors can enjoy nearly two dozen miles of cross-country skiing trails and seven chairlifts ready to whisk you up to some of the Midwest’s most thrilling downhill skiing. One of our favorite slopes, Shafer Butte rises up to about 7600 feet, making it the tallest summit in the whole Boise Ridge mountain range. During the warmer months, the Bogus Basin Recreation Area is the perfect place for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and picnicking. And of course, no matter what the weather happens to be, whether the height of summer’s heat or the iciest depth of winter’s chill, you won’t find a place on earth more comfortable or inviting than Boise’s Inn at 500 Capitol.
